After hearing that 50 children in Western Cape’s Solly’s Town had been left with nothing after a tragic fire destroyed their homes, Boxer Superstores rushed to help and have managed to ensure that every child who lost their school stationery could finally begin their school year.

The fire, which took hours to bring under control, razed hundreds of homes and left 400 people homeless on the 14^th January. It also destroyed several thousand rands worth of school stationery which had been bought and stored at home by parents of the Nomzamo town.  With not even a pen spared from the heat of the fire, parents had no choice but to keep their children at home. Boxer Western Cape Regional Manager, Shaun Oberholzer, who lives near Solly’s Town said he was saddened by the situation. “I woke up and saw what had happened and immediately worried about the many pupils who were meant to start school. Luckily we have a great range of stationery at Boxer and knew that we could help out,” said Oberholzer.  The Regional Manager organised stationery and refreshments for every pupil in that area and met with the community to drop off the items. “At least now, amongst all this horrible news, the young pupils can start their school year,” he added.

“We received a message early in the morning from Shaun informing us about the fire and the urgent need to help these pupils.  Our Western Cape Superstores serve many of these affected families and we know how important it was to get these children into school and settled in as quickly as possible. Boxer is glad to have been able to assist in ensuring that at least now the 2020 school year can really begin for these 50 pupils and we hope that the community of Solly’s Town is able to rebuild what was destroyed,” said Boxer Marketing Director Andrew Mills.

For a long time Isipingo resident Xolani Maphumulo would wake up, uncertain as to where his next paycheck would be coming from.

Unemployment occupied his mind constantly as he walked from building to building, as it does for over 6.7 million unemployed people nationwide, in Isipingo collecting refuse for recycling; a difficult and inconsistent job at best.

That was until he was given a life changing moment that would see Xolani become part of the Abhelengi Bemvelo Project, Boxer’s ‘green initiatives’ section of the company which specifically aims at caring for the community and the environment.

Now, Xolani is tasked to sort through Boxer’s excess plastics & cardboard and uses the waste baler at Boxer Isipingo (one of many based at dozens of Boxer Superstores across South Africa) to compress the sorted items into 40kg bales.

“I am happy that I can now earn a living and help the environment at the same time,” said Xolani.

About Boxer’s Abhelengi Bemvelo Project

The Abhelengi Bemvelo Project has two main aims: to create meaningful jobs through sustainable enterprise development and to maintain initiatives which are environmentally sustainable while promoting a healthier future for generations to come.

Xolani is one of more than 140 people who have been employed by Boxer to take care of and maintain the company’s recycling project.

Instead of having to deliver the recycled bales to the recycling depots himself, Xolani and his peers pack the bales into Boxer trucks which return the bales to the Boxer Distribution Centres across the country.

These bales are then sent to recycling depots which pay for the bales and that money is given directly to the recyclers.

“By absorbing the cost and effort required to deliver those bales, we are ensuring our Abhelengi Bemvelo Project recyclers are able to earn a wage without needing to spend their personal money and time on the very challenging task of delivery bales daily.

“It’s a cost we are more than happy to absorb because it people such as Xolani to survive while making a positive impact in the environment,” said Boxer Marketing Director Andrew Mills.

The numbers speak for themselves: in 2019 over 2609 tonnes of waste was collected and recycled from 140 stores reducing many thousands of metres of waste ending up in landfills.

With load shedding and electricity a major issue in South Africa, Boxer saved over 13 million kWh of electricity and over 44 000 trees. Over 73 million litres of water were also conserved, allowing the precious resource to be used elsewhere in South Africa.

Combining these figures with the fact that 140 people who were previously unemployed now have an income generating business, Boxer’s Abhelengi Bemvelo Project, which translates as “Rescuers of the Environment” in isiZulu, is indeed coming to the rescue.

Philiswa, the principal of Bangweni Primary School in Idutywa recently received a surprise visit at her school from the Boxer Eastern Cape team headed by Regional Manager Sobs Dlima. “Everyone is proud of Zozibini, but we are also proud of Philiswa,” said Sobs. “It takes a strong woman to raise a leader like Zozibini and we wanted to let her know that we love her, and we are proud of how she has raised such a powerful woman.” Sobs and his Boxer team arrived unannounced at the school that has 60 children. “We wanted to give her a “royal’ cake and provide for the school too,” said Sobs. “These youngsters are inspired by our new Miss Universe and they are fortunate to be taught by Zozibini’s mother.” Philiswa thanked Boxer for the surprise. “I didn’t expect this! I’m happy that we could celebrate together with my children. The donation will be put to good use for my pupils as it’s the start of the year and we need to buy lots of things,” said Philiswa. Sobs also donated a R2 000 Boxer Gift Card to the school. “We are proud of Zozibini and we are of Philiswa for the amazing work she does every day at the school. Who knows? As South Africans strives to create better conditions for pupils in classrooms across the country, Boxer Empangeni has heeded the call and ensured that a local school has enough writing material to get the most out of their 2020 year of learning.

“We recently learnt that a school in the community we serve, Nongweleza High School, was in desperate need of exercise books to conduct proper learning and school work. We had to step in and lend a hand,” said Boxer Empangeni Branch Manager Ndumiso Zwane.  Zwane sent his store’s assistant branch manager Anita Radebe to the school with dozens of exercise books for the pupils. “Now they can put pen to paper and concentrate on their studies,” added Zwane.

The low price discount supermarket has a long history in Empangeni. “Boxer originally opened its first store in Empangeni in 1977. As part of Uber’s ‘Move What Matters’ global campaign, Uber has announced that it has partnered with Afrika Tikkun, a non-profit organisation supporting underprivileged communities, to help feed vulnerable communities. The initiative also aims to help Uber drivers and couriers that are impacted most heavily by the lockdown.

According to the duo, as families lose income and work opportunities continue to decline due to the global pandemic, the daily food needs of communities has become a real threat.

Through the initiative, loyal Uber drivers and couriers will be able to purchase food items from their closest Boxer Superstores stores by accessing a one-time e-coupon via the established driver and courier channels.

Drivers and couriers have received communication providing steps on how to retrieve their e-coupon, as well as Boxer Superstore’s food recommendations on what to purchase.

Ensuring the wider community is also supported, Afrika Tikkun is utilising Uber’s latest solution, Uber Direct, to help facilitate food packages to communities in need. The power of this solution to reach a greater set of communities is evident in Uber’s latest partnership with SA Harvest, a food rescue organisation.

Using Uber Direct, the NGO says that it has been able to expand and optimise deliveries to their beneficiary organisations such as Afrika Tikkun, while reaching vulnerable people in Gauteng for the first time.

“The most important thing we can do right now is to support our drivers and couriers, as well as those most impacted in our communities,” says Alon Lits, director for Uber sub-Saharan Africa.

“With this unique partnership, we hope to demonstrate our commitment to the Uber community and beyond during this difficult time by supporting food relief to people in need,” adds Lits.
